Free State Social and why I’m excited to attend

by cinta5 on April 22, 2010

A social media conference in my back yard? Yes, please! Next Thursday in Lawrence social media enthusiasts, and those wanting to learn more about the industry, will be flocking to the Oread for Free State Social.

There are a few reasons why I’m looking forward to this event. First, the lineup of speakers for this first time SM conference is solid. Chris Brogan and Jeremiah Owyang are two of the bigger names in the social media world, but if you’re like me and on a budget you probably haven’t had the opportunity to hear them speak. From already knowing a little bit about each speaker and looking at the agenda, each speaker is highly qualified to cover their topic.

Second, the attendees. The majority of them are from ’round these parts 🙂 and are enthusiastic about social media. It’ll be nice to meet and chat and get better acquainted with those that I’ve met via Twitter. (@JLangford for those that I haven’t had a digital handshake with yet)

Third, I’m interested to hear what people think is the next big thing. Jason Falls of SocialMediaExplorer.com wrote a blog post a couple of months ago titled “What’s Next In Social Media Is Now And Mobile” It will be interesting to hear what other members of the industry think.

Lastly, and probably the most exciting thing, is for all of these people coming from out of town to experience Lawrence. Lawrence is an awesome city and I’m proud to be from here. On numerous occasions first time visitors have come here and said, “Wow, this place is great!” I typically joke and say “Don’t tell anyone, it’s a secret.”
